Step 1:
To make this look good on your desktop we need to start by creating a new document that is 4 times as big as your screen resolution, both on the height and the width. I created a document that was 6720 * 4200 pixels since my screen resolution is 1680 * 1050.Step 2:
Now we are going to use the gradient tool to make a gradient that is white at the bottom of the document and the color you want on you explosion in the top of the document. Hold down shift to make shore that the gradient is straight, if it's not straight it might look a little weird when we are finished.

Use Filter > Distort > Polar coordinates to wrap the image around its middle, creating that explosive look. Below is the settings that I used.
Step 5:
Select the upper half of the document and copy it with ctrl + c. Create a new document with the same size as your screen resolution, in my case 1680 * 1050. Paste the selection with ctrl + v. The new layer will be bigger then the document so you need to resize it, do this with by hitting ctrl + t and hold down shift while dragging the handles to ensure that it's resized equally much on the height and the width.
