Cute avatar
Step 1:
I will create my avatar shaped like a triangle but you can use a circle, square, star or whatever shape you want, the steps are the same.
Make sure you have the Grid visible, if you don’t go to View > Show > Grid and click it.
I now use the Polygonal Lasso Tool to make a selection shaped like a triangle and then right click the selection and selects Make Work Path.

Step 2:
Select the Brush tool from the tools window and open the Brush preset picker, there set the Diameter to 15px and Hardness to 100%.Now create a new layer with ctrl + shift + n and select the Path Selection Tool from the tools window. Right click the path and select Stroke Path, in the window that opens select Brush from the dropdown and press ok.
You should now have a outlined triangle with rounded corners.
Step 3:
Once again create a new layer and position it under the previous layer. Right click on the path and select Create vector mask. Go to Edit > Transform Path > Scale now hold down shift and drag the upper right corner handle down to the left.
Select the Paint Bucket Tool and fill the layer with a lighter shade of the outline color.

Step 4:
Duplicate the precious layer with ctrl + j and scale it down in the same fashion as in the previous step. Fill it with a lighter shade then the previous layer color.Repeat this step about two times, bellow is my result after this two steps.
Step 5:
I don’t want much detail on my avatar so I only added eyes.I did my eyes by creating a new layer and then drew a circle with the Ellipse Tool, changed the shape mode to Subtract from shape area and drew a smaller circle inside the first, and subtracted the lower half of the shape with the Rectangle Tool.
When the first eye is finished simply duplicate the layer and position both layers as you want them.
